Abstract

Ample studies have examined L2 writing anxiety and its relation to writing performance and its sources and/or impacts. However research which investigates the role of dialogue journal writing (DJW) to reduce learners rsquo writing anxiety especially in the EFL context and the online setting is limited. ESL studies have affirmed that there are positive impacts of DJW on ESL students rsquo anxiety. This study aimed to examine the impacts of implementing online DJW to alleviate EFL students rsquo writing anxiety in the online class. An explanatory sequential design which combines pre-experimental with one-group-pretest-posttest-design and interview was employed to examine the aforementioned purpose. The study sample comprised one single essay writing class consisting of 28 undergraduate students from 2020/2021 English Department Universitas Negeri Malang. Data were collected via two instruments Cheng s (2004a) Second Language Writing Anxiety Inventory (SLWAI) and interview. The findings of this study discovered that online DJW does not seem to have a significant impact in reducing EFL students rsquo writing anxiety in online learning. Despite the fact that there were two students who were able to lower their writing anxiety from high writing anxiety (HWA) to moderate writing anxiety (MWA) and low writing anxiety (LWA) it cannot signify the role of online DJW as a tool to reduce students rsquo writing anxiety. In terms of type of writing anxiety students were recorded to have a high level of writing anxiety on avoidance behavior followed by cognitive anxiety and somatic anxiety respectively at the end of this study. However from the interview data it was found that online DJW helps students to build their awareness of learning by developing a positive learning attitude. Their positive learning attitude covers having higher self-confidence having integrative motivation having an extensive vocabulary reduced apprehension or nervousness in class increased awareness of grammatical and getting used to writing. Regarding the limitations of this study which cover a small sample short period of data collection and conducted in an online setting only future studies could be administered in a longitudinal mode with a bigger sample and diverse setting e.g. argumentative thesis or research papers since each genre of essay has its own linguistics features making it worthy of further investigation.
