Abstract

The need of critical thinking skills in the digital era has been the main point at many aspects as people can derive information from any sources. Critical thinking skill can be developed through various activities one of which is reading especially in language classroom through particular strategies. Therefore reading teachers hold an important role in concepting the appropriate teaching strategies in order to achieve the goal of teaching critical thinking through reading. A case study research design is conducted in order to investigate the Advanced Reading teacher rsquo s beliefs in teaching reading and the practice of teaching which reflects the beliefs on the strategy of teaching reading especially by involving critical thinking. The subject of the present research is an Advanced Reading teacher who teaches students in the fourth semester. The data are collected through in-depth interviews and observations then the findings are presented descriptively. The findings of the present study indicates that the teacher believes in several strategies in teaching reading which are case study group discussion and presentation of the text rsquo s summary. While for the teaching practice the researcher finds that the teacher implements several strategies which are group and classroom discussion presentation and questioning summarizing and also storytelling. Some of the strategies are congruent with the teacher rsquo s beliefs and some others are not in line with the teacher rsquo s beliefs. Even so there is a main concept the teacher has in her belief and she also implements it that is the belief on integrating critical thinking skills and implementing stages of higher order thinking skills in reading activities. The teacher acknowledges that the beliefs of the teaching strategies might change in the teaching and learning process.
