Abstract

Learning how to write in English is one of the most challenging activity for the students. They learn to write in English face a variety of hurdles and difficulties because it is an active and productive skill. One of the problems that might be appear on students is writing apprehension. Writing performance is one of the effects of writing apprehension according to various studies. The influence of writing apprehension on writing performance can be used to predict writing quality. Writing apprehension is widely recognized as a factor in poor writing achievement and performance by students teachers and researchers. In order to measure the degree of students writing apprehension and the degree of correlation between students writing apprehension and writing performance the current study used a mixed method research design through the use of quantitative data collected through a correlational research design. and the reasons why students have writing apprehension in the form of qualitative data by using descriptive qualitative design. The subjects of this study were 38 fourth-semester English Education Department students. Three tools were employed in this study Writing Apprehension Test (WAT) the Writing Test and an interview. The research discovered that 13 students (34%) had a high level of writing fear with a score ranging from 26 to 78. Then more than a half of students (58%) were enrolled an average writing apprehension with the score ranging is 79-96. Lastly 3 students with the score 97-130 (8%) experienced a low writing apprehension. Moreover based on 13 respondents the factors why they had a high writing apprehension because they were afraid of organizing the idea when composing an essay (100%) had a lack of knowledge in English structure (100%) and lack of knowledge in English Vocabulary (77%). Moreover 77% of the respondents thought that writing English was hard and challenging 69% of them had a problem in developing topic. Also some of them were afraid of the evaluations that come from the lecturers or their friends (69%) and 57% of them dislike writing in English. In addition there was a negative correlation between writing apprehension and student rsquo s writing performance with Pearson correlation coefficient is -0 403 and Spearman correlation coefficient is -0 341. Meanwhile the value of significant is 0 0012 and 0 036 lt 5% mean that writing apprehension and student rsquo s writing performance has a significant correlation. These findings also support the previous research which investigated the relationship between those factors.
