The study of grammar for young learners has never been convenient but it is necessary to conduct it by paying attention to the students rsquo characteristics that lack abstract thinking skills. As a result the learning methods have been developed for years to create meaningful grammar learning that suits the students rsquo needs. This development leads to the discovery of reflective journal writing as a method to teach grammatical tenses especially simple present tense and present progressive tense. Previous studies have proven that this method impacts students rsquo performance in terms of writing and critical thinking skills. However the study that discusses reflective journal writing and grammar learning is still limited so this study was conducted to find out the effectiveness of reflective journal writing to enhance EFL young learners rsquo production of simple present and present progressive tenses as well as investigate young learners rsquo perceptions of the use of reflective journal writing to enhance their production of simple present and present progressive tenses. This study used a pre-experimental design involving a pre-test treatment and post-test. A questionnaire was also implemented to investigate EFL young learners rsquo perceptions toward reflective journal writing. In addition the researcher conducted the study in a bilingual class in the primary school in Malang East Java. It was found that reflective journal writing can improve students rsquo ability to produce simple present and present progressive tenses but it did not create a significant difference. On the other hand it was found that students perceived reflective journal writing as a helpful method to practice grammar and an easy useful and fun activity. This current study contributed to obtaining new findings on reflective journal writing especially for EFL young learners.
