Abstract

Speaking is the challenging skills for students to learn. Because of the issue the students faced anxiety in speaking using English. Lately due to the pandemic of COVID-19 learning activities have to be done online so it can make student feels anxious when they speak in English. The goal of this research is investigating the factors that can cause speaking anxiety and to find out the strategies that can be used to reduce or handle speaking anxiety in ELE students. This research used a descriptive mixed-method. The research subjects are 40 students for the questionnaire and six students for the interview of ELE students in the 2020 cohort who have been doing online classes at Universitas Negeri Malang. The instruments used in this research were a closed-ended questionnaire and a structured interview. The result of this research revealed that most ELE students faced speaking anxiety when doing online classes. The possible causes behind speaking anxiety are speaking anxiety as a distinct phenomenon spontaneous speaking fear of making mistakes and lack of speaking skills and confidence. This research also found out that there are some possible strategies to reduce speaking anxiety.
