Abstract

Studies have shown that mobile applications can effectively enhance vocabulary learning. Duolingo Quizlet Hello Talk and EWA have garnered attention among the most popular language learning apps. The limited research and published data regarding the use of the EWA application for vocabulary improvement make EWA became an interesting choice for this research. Therefore the purpose of this study is to find out the effects of implementing the EWA app to improve students rsquo vocabulary mastery at one Senior High School in Central Lampung. The research question proposed for this purpose was whether there is any significant difference in vocabulary mastery between students taught using the EWA app and those taught by a conventional method. A quasi-experimental design was adopted in this study. The research participants were 51 tenth graders in a senior high school in Central Lampung. In this research the experimental group was given treatment by utilizing the EWA application. Meanwhile the control group taught conventionally. The data was obtained from the vocabulary levels test as pre-and post-tests. The data was analyzed by using SPPS with the Mann-Whitney U test since the data was not normally distributed. The results showed that vocabulary on levels 1000 4000 and 5000 obtained significance values (p) less than 0.05 (p lt 0.05). Hence HA1 HA4 and HA5 there is a significant difference in vocabulary mastery at 1000 4000 and 5000-word levels between tenth graders who are taught using the EWA app and those using the textbooks are accepted. The findings suggest teachers integrate the EWA app into the teaching and learning process and choose materials or contents in EWA that are appropriate to the target language needs and levels.
