Abstract

The aim of this study was to improve students rsquo writing skills through the Student Team Achievement Division method. The research employed classroom action research and was conducted over two cycles each comprising four meetings. The study involved 25 students of class X2 at SMAN 6 Malang including 9 male and 16 female students. The researcher used student writing tests to determine the student s learning outcomes at the end of each meeting. The STAD method was used to develop writing skills by encouraging students to collaborate in small teams and improve their writing skills with a focus on organization and vocabulary in writing skills. The results of the student tests in cycle I and cycle II were found to be different. The first cycle resulted in unsatisfactory outcomes prompting the implementation of the second cycle to refine or adjust the utilized method the mean score on Organization was 68.2 in cycle I and in cycle II was improved to 81.6. Similarly the mean score on Vocabulary was 69.8 in cycle I and improved to 85.56 in cycle II. After having gone through two cycles the results indicated that implementing the STAD method could improve students writing skills in the second cycle.
