Abstract

Anxiety is a psychological phenomenon that greatly influences the EFL student learning process especially in speaking skills. The purposes of this research are to determine the level of students rsquo speaking anxiety in English class to find out the dominant factor of students rsquo speaking anxiety and to find out the possible solutions to overcome anxiety in speaking based on students rsquo point of view. This research employed a survey research design involving 34 tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Dampit. A survey research design was used in this research because the researcher aims to obtain an overview of the attitudes opinions and characteristics of a population. The researcher used a questionnaire adopted from FLCAS questionnaire from Horwitz et al. (1986) and semi-structured interview to obtain the data about the level of students speaking anxiety the most dominant factor of students speaking anxiety and the possible solutions to overcome students rsquo speaking anxiety in English class. The findings indicated that the level of students rsquo speaking anxiety is at moderate level with fear of negative evaluation as the dominant factor in speaking anxiety experienced by students in English class. The possible solutions to overcome students rsquo speaking anxiety are that students should regularly practice speaking using mirror talking increase their self-confidence and watch English movies and listen to English songs to enrich their vocabulary and check their English pronunciation. Other possible solutions to overcome students rsquo speaking anxiety are that English teachers are supposed to use two languages (Indonesian and English) create a comfortable atmosphere in class and evaluate students rsquo speaking performance by discussing it personally with the students.
