Abstract

In Indonesia English is a foreign language that is used as one of the mandatory subjects taught starting from the elementary level to the college level. One of the most essential aspects of learning a foreign language is expanding the vocabulary. Vocabulary is an essential key to reading comprehension. Readers cannot comprehend what they are reading unless they understand most of the words in a sentence. Due to the problem faced by the teacher in the school which many students failed to achieve good grades in English correlational research about students' vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension with their English final grades were conducted. The method of this study is quantitative and the design is correlational. The research objective was to determine the correlation between the eighth graders' vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension with their English final grades. The research used one instrument consisting of a vocabulary mastery test and a reading comprehension test. The sample for this study was chosen using the purposive sampling technique. The study population was grade 8 students at SMPN 2 Mojokerto which has 280 students. The research sample was 28 students from 8-E at SMPN 2 Mojokerto. The obtained data were analyzed by using IBM SPSS 26. The outcomes of this study show that there is a significant positive correlation between the eighth graders rsquo vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension with their English final grades. Thus the researcher suggests that the teacher should pay more attention to vocabulary and reading learning material to increase students rsquo final grades. The researcher recommends to future researchers in conducting a similar study involve different students in a different school such as high school or elementary school and knowing how well this type of research can be implemented. The researcher also recommends future researchers who will do a similar study to develop their own instrument that matches the learning outcomes stated in the curriculum to find out what can be the correlation results toward students' English final grades.
