Abstract

This study aimed to explore teachers understanding implementation and students perception of genre-based grammar teaching. The data were collected through classroom observation documentation and interviews. The participants included four English teachers and 18 students from an Indonesian high school. The data were then compiled into one then classified and summarized to facilitate data analysis and discussion. The data was analyzed using an exploratory case study design with Halliday s Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory as the theoretical framework for the analysis allowing the researcher to comprehend the underlying patterns and principles of genre-based grammar teaching practice. According to the findings the majority of teachers have previously implemented genre-based grammar teaching into their classrooms and possess a reasonable comprehension of it. The findings showed that the teachers implemented genre-based grammar teaching both implicitly and explicitly. The implementations of genre-based grammar approach were in the Modelling of Text (MOT) and Joint Construction of the Text (JCOT) stages. Additionally the students show a positive perspective on the use of genre-based grammar teaching in the classroom.
