Abstract

Scrabble is one of useful learning medium in learning English especially spelling. The implementation of Scrabble could give interactive learning to improve students rsquo spelling challenges. This study aims to investigate students rsquo spelling challenges and students rsquo experiences on the use of Scrabble to improve students rsquo spelling skills. The subject of the study were 31 EFL students in twelve grade of language program in one of senior high school in Malang. An explanatory mixed method design was conducted. An online questionnaire was used to collect the quantitative data which was used to determine students rsquo spelling challenges. The quantitative data were analyzed using SPSS. An interview was carried out to gather the qualitative data which were used as the complement of the quantitative data. The qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis by Braun and Clarke (2006). The current study found that students frequently struggled with spelling problems such as the following first they frequently spelt words as they sounded and they frequently combined different spelling strategies. Additionally while some students proofread others did not. Third students frequently discovered homonym terms as well as substitution omission transposition and insertion problems in their writing. Additionally pupils said Scrabble was a fun and practical learning tool for enhancing their spelling abilities.
