Abstract

A quantitative study was conducted to investigate the influence of students perceptions of the role of extensive reading in improving their vocabulary mastery. Motivated by the observed relationship between extensive reading and vocabulary acquisition a sample of 50 students from an English Department of the 2020 cohort was selected using a convenience sampling method. Data collection involved a survey that employed a Likert scale in the questionnaire to calculate percentages. The research yield three significant findings. Firstly a generally positive perception of extensive reading was observed among students. Secondly extensive reading had a substantial impact on expanding students vocabularies. Lastly this approach proved particularly advantageous for English major students demonstrating potential applications in various English-related activities. The study also emphasized the positive influence of improved vocabulary on students lectures and reading habits as well as providing additional online English reading resources such as webpages e-books and modern reading techniques. Future research should further explore EFL students perceptions of how extensive reading affects vocabulary learning tailoring methods to their skills and experiences thus revolutionizing the landscape of extensive reading.
