Abstract

To improve students reading comprehension teachers need to find reading strategies that suit students so the reading strategies can benefit students in improving their reading comprehension. One cognitive strategy that aims to improve student s reading comprehension is the Ask-Read-Tell (ART) reading strategy. Therefore the research objectives are to find out how the ART reading strategy can improve students reading comprehension and to investigate students attitudes toward using ART as a reading strategy. The research design used was Classroom Action Research (CAR) with 20 students of Class 5C SDI Al-Khairiyah Banyuwangi as the research participants. Data were collected using tests and field notes. The test used to measure students reading comprehension skills where the test was carried out twice in the preliminary study and after the implementation of the ART reading strategy with both tests consisting of 6 essay questions and done within 30 minutes. The findings showed that the ART reading strategy could improve students reading comprehension. Based on the findings the success of utilizing the ART reading strategy is influenced by students attitudes as they thoroughly follow the instructions and steps outlined in the strategy. The findings also reveal three positive impacts after implementing the ART reading strategy students can generate critical thinking encourage students to read more and positively impact the classroom atmosphere. The current research also provides benefits to teaching and learning because utilizing the ART reading strategy can boost students interest in reading which leads to enhance students insights and positively impacts achievement in various subjects as the ART reading strategy can be customized to meet individual needs and support both struggling and advanced learners through supervised teaching text analysis and complex discussions.
