Abstract

Reading is one of the primary skills that must be acquired by students besides three other skills in learning English. Through reading comprehension students can acquire many benefits that will boost their academic performance for instance increase their knowledge vocabulary and critical thinking. However many students find out that reading comprehension is difficult and affects their achievement due to several factors such as less interest lack of vocabulary and lack of support from the environment. The intention of this research was to know the reading comprehension ability of eleventh graders of one of the Islamic Senior High Schools in Kabupaten Blitar and their challenges in comprehending Explanation Texts. The population in this research was all eleventh graders consisting of 600 students. Yet the researcher only took 30% with a total of 179 students as the sample using convenience sampling. The study used descriptive quantitative employing two instruments namely a reading comprehension test and an interview guide with eight students who had low scores below 40 from the result of the test as respondents. The result showed that students had low reading comprehension ability. The average score of students rsquo reading comprehension test was 56.48 and was categorized as poor level. Then the most challenging part in reading comprehension for students was locating references with 29% of students rsquo incorrect answers and vocabulary with 25% of students rsquo incorrect answers. The most dominant factors that affected students rsquo reading comprehension were insufficient vocabulary knowledge less interest and lack of parental involvement at home.
