Hedges and boosters are linguistic devices employed to reduce and increase the force of statements. These strategies are important in conveying a writer rsquo s degree of confidence and therefore their credibility. This study uses mixed methods to investigate the use of hedges and boosters in 40 English abstracts written by Indonesian scholars for Indonesian-based conferences. The hedges and boosters were identified and analysed using a compilation of hedges taxonomies from Brooke rsquo s (2016) model and Hinkel rsquo s (2005) taxonomy of boosters. The quantitative investigation led to a finding that the Indonesian scholars employed more hedges than boosters suggesting that they were being cautious in conveying their claims. The results also show that there were five types of hedges and two types of boosters used.
