Abstract

Digital learning environment produces new concepts and understanding of language learning and teaching. Students are encouraged to be able to manage their goals and learning process independently. However the success of self-regulated learning (SRL) in the digital era depends on the students rsquo ability to explore the latest technology which is defined as the digital literacy. The problem comes when the use of higher technology unbalances students rsquo level of digital and information literacy. Imbalanced digital SRL explicated the gap between its implementation and the SRL was not a newly developed topic in educational psychology. There were research findings discussing SRL in other areas but a few was applied in language learning researches. In addition researches in Indonesia have not gone further into SRL implications towards the recent learning development. It triggered the current researchers to look at the real picture of students digital and information literacy abilities and its effect on self-regulated learning. Therefore this research focused on examining the effect of students rsquo digital literacy skills on SRL implementation in digital learning environment. The researcher designed a quantitative research with two sets of questionnaire. The questionnaires were distributed to 70 respondents from EFL students at the Department of English Universitas Negeri Malang. Questionnaire data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to find digital literacy skills and SRL. The effect of digital literacy on SRL was analyzed using Pearson rsquo s correlation formula. Interview were also conducted to confirm respondent answers and to figure out underlying reasons of the responses. The result showed that the students have high level of digital literacy and good SRL implementation. However the quantitative result showed that the two variables had low correlation. This indicated students did not apply their literacy for SRL. The interview data showed that there were underlying factors affecting their decisions and preferences in SRL implementation such as goal-setting motivation and beliefs toward digital environment. The research results can be used as a reference for lecturers of Universitas Negeri Malang and other institutions to develop a more effective approaches in learning models. This research also exemplifies that low correlation between the variables opened opportunities for future researches to investigate more about SRL moreover on topics about students rsquo motivation goal-setting and beliefs. The findings also implied that digital literacy should balance with the implementation of 6C competences.
