Abstract

Blended learning presents challenges for students and teachers in terms of cognitive social and teaching presence. Studies have found that students may experience increased cognitive load due to the lack of guidance from teaching presence and they may also feel isolated and unsupported without social presence. Challenges in presence are linked to media utilization and limited ICT usage can cause difficulties for students particularly those without access. Students rsquo perceptions and expectations of presence are essential to ensure the success of blended learning yet there is a gap in the literature regarding the learners perceptions and expectations of the importance of presence. The study using sequential explanatory strategy is aimed to investigate the English Language Teaching students rsquo perceptions and expectations of the importance of presence in blended learning. There are ten broad aspects combined in cognitive social and teaching presence. The study was conducted in Universitas Negeri Malang with 101 respondents and seven (7) selected students for interview from cohort 2020 and 2021. The data was obtained by distributing an online questionnaire (40 items for perceptions and 40 items for expectation) and doing interviews (16 open-ended questions) to dig deeper information from the selected students. The findings of this study revealed that while students recognize the importance of regulating their own learning in cognitive presence they often rely on teachers and friends for support. In social presence students value building relationships with teachers and classmates but prefer discussions to be focused on course-related topics. In terms of teaching presence students expect teachers to provide clear instruction create a positive learning environment and offer support and guidance. They also want teachers to understand and address their personal and technical problems though they avoid telling stories to teachers. Overall students have high expectations of teachers in facilitating their engagement and learning in blended environments.
