Abstract

The metacognitive awareness of reading strategies determines how learners engage with a text and reflect on their own reading processes. The purpose of this study is to investigate the metacognitive strategies and the awareness of reading strategies of English as Foreign Language (EFL) undergraduate students at Universitas Negeri Malang majoring in English Language Education (ELE) while reading academic materials. This study administered a survey to 100 students and conducted structured interviews with 10 students who are willing to be interviewed. Two instruments were used for data collection a questionnaire adapted from the Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory (MARSI) and structured interviews. The findings identified that undergraduates favor Problem-Solving Strategies over Global Reading Strategies and Support Reading Strategies. Furthermore the results indicated that EFL undergraduates reported moderate reading proficiency and metacognitive strategy use. The results of the study are intended to aid lecturer in teaching students how to effectively adapt or employ various reading strategies.
