Abstract

Grammar mastery is one of the components of language that cannot be isolated from writing because the two aspects complement one another. This research aimed to determine whether there was a correlation between grammar mastery and students writing ability in composing recount text among the eighth graders of MTsN 1 Malang. The quantitative approach and the correlational research design were both implemented in this research. Fifty-five students from two classes were taken as the sample. The researchers collected the data by employing grammar tests and writing tests. The researchers analyzed the data using Pearson Product Moment in SPSS. The result revealed a significant value of 0.000 lt 0.05 while the correlation coefficient value and the r table were 0.718 gt 0.2656 demonstrating a strong positive correlation between grammar mastery and students ability in writing. It was considered that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It conveys that the better students understand grammar the higher their writing score tends to be. In conclusion the relationship between grammar mastery and students eighth-grade writing ability in recount text at MTsN 1 Malang was significant.
