Abstract

In order to communicate speaking is an important skill to master. However it still becomes a challenge for most of people. Subtitles in videos have become one of the alternatives that can be used as learning media to learn English skills including speaking. Therefore this study investigated the correlation between students rsquo habit in watching videos with English subtitles and their speaking ability. The study was conducted at SMA Negeri 1 Driyorejo and involved 33 tenth grade students as the sample subjects. Correlation research design was employed in this study. A close-ended questionnaire and an oral test were used as the research instruments and the data was analyzed using SPSS 25 program. With alpha 0.876 ge 0.05 the findings found out that the r-value was 0.028 which means that H0 fails to be rejected and H1 cannot be accepted. The result implies that there is no significant correlation between the students rsquo habit in watching videos with English subtitles and their speaking ability. Students rsquo lack of practice and further action toward the knowledge obtained which led to them to get low scores for the oral test could be the reason why this result happened despite the frequent use of the English subtitles.
