Abstract

It is crucial for college students to improve their reading skills when learning English as a foreign language. College students must read as much as possible and form reading habits to accomplish that. English novels can be used as reading material for college students since they contain elements that can support the learning process such as social culture vocabulary and grammar. Therefore this study aims to examine whether there is a correlation between college students readinghabits of reading English novels and their reading competence. This type of research used a quantitative and was analyzed with SPSS. The first data collection method employed was a questionnaire that was spread via Google Form. The second data collection method was an interview and the third was documentation the college students Advance Reading scores. Those three such as questionnaire interview and documentations are the research instruments. The results revealed that there is no correlation between college students rsquo habits of reading English novels and their reading competence. According to the interview results college students prefer to do other things but to read for example they prefer to watch movies which is not a reading act and scroll through social media.
