Abstract

This study is conducted to improve the descriptive writing ability of seventh graders by using comics as the learning media. Meanwhile the problem faced is that most of the students find difficulty in writing activities especially in applying grammar knowledge. In the curriculum teachers need to use different kind of medias including comics. Comics can be used to improve the students rsquo grammar knowledge in descriptive writing. This current study aims to solve the problems and explain how comics are implemented. The research design employed is Classroom Action Research (CAR). The participants of this study are 26 students of one of the public schools in Malang. The data were collected from the preliminary study writing test observation interview field notes and questionnaire. The result showed that students rsquo descriptive writing ability was improved. It was proven by the improvement of the mean score from the criteria of success (75.00) to the writing test (89.00). The writing test score has achieved the criteria of success (80% of the students achieved an average score ge 75.00). It also shows the student rsquo s positive responses to the use of comics as the learning media. Using comics could improve the students rsquo descriptive writing ability and grammatical mastery.
