Abstract

Writing descriptive paragraphs is one of the fundamental competencies that should be mastered by first-year students in their stage. However many EFL students still have difficulties to write descriptive paragraphs with a correct grammar structure. This research intends to examine grammatical errors in first-year English Language Education students descriptive paragraph writing. This study used content analysis research with a descriptive qualitative approach. The subjects of this study are 34 students from the English Language Eduaction of Universitas Negeri Malang. The researcher used documentation of students writing tasks as the instrument. The data were collected through Google Drive. To analyze the data the researcher used the Surface Strategy Taxonomy classification represented by Dulay et al. (1982). The study reveals that the dominant error in students writing is misformation (41%). Then the other errors are omission errors (37%) addition errors (19%) and misordering (3%). Through some practices and evaluations learners are expected to continue improving both their writing and grammar skills that benefit their future academic careers.
