Abstract

Abstract One of the writing courses in English writing is argumentative writing. Learning argumentative writing needs good knowledge about the components of argumentation to serve its purpose to persuade the readers. In addition the use of metadiscourse is very important and needed in argumentative writing. This research was conducted to find out what kinds of metadiscourse used by the participants and how the use of metadiscourse serve the intended function of writing. This study used descriptive method. The subjects were 27 ELT students of Universitas Negeri Malang. The findings show that the participants use interactional metadiscourse more than interactive metadiscourse. The descriptions of the occurences between the two types are 49.75% for interactive metadiscourse and 50.25% for interactional metadiscourse. For interactive metadiscourse the most frequently used category is transition while for interactional metadiscourse the most frequently used category is hedges. The use of interactional metadiscourse more than interactive metadiscourse means that the subjects have conveyed better persuasion in constructing their argumentative essays. The use of metadiscourse described in the research also supports the components of argumentation and it served the intended function of the writing.
