Abstract

Motivation is a reason that drives people to behave or a desire to do something. In EFL contexts motivation influences students rsquo learning process deciding their learning outcomes of acquiring English. Motivation can be further divided into two intrinsic motivation which comes from our thoughts and extrinsic motivation which is influenced by external forces. This study aims to investigate students rsquo intrinsic and extrinsic motivation in learning English and determine how high or low their motivation is. In this survey study the researcher utilized a questionnaire adopted from Gardner rsquo s Attitude/Motivation Test Battery (2004) to collect data. The subjects were 60 students of the Economic Development Study Program Universitas Negeri Malang in the academic year 2022. The respondents answers represented on a five-point Likert scale were then calculated to get the average score. The findings from the questionnaire showed that the respondents are highly motivated to learn English as a foreign language. The high motivation is indicated by a score of 3.99 average in intrinsic motivation and 3.89 for extrinsic motivation out of 5 main ranges. It can be concluded that the respondents have high motivation in learning English both intrinsic and extrinsic.
