Abstract

Students in Indonesia had difficulties learning English due to unknown words and their meanings. This study aimed to determine how intensive reading benefits vocabulary knowledge and how students respond to it. This study was conducted using a one-group pretest and posttest design. Participants were students of twelfth graders with 27 students. As the instruments for this study vocabulary tests (the Word Association Test (WAT) the Vocabulary Level Test (VLT) (receptive and productive) a questionnaire and observation were conducted. The results of the study showed that intensive reading could be used to increase vocabulary knowledge in the class. Both the WAT and VLT (productive) revealed that the students could gain 10 points higher than the previous test but the students were unable to reach 10 points higher than the previous test in the VLT (receptive). Based on the questionnaire results students learned how to do intensive reading and gained knowledge of how to increase their vocabulary. They believed this method could be applied again in the classroom. For teachers and other researchers it is critical to focus on selecting the target words for the texts that will be used.
