Abstract

An English club program is an extracurricular activity in which a group of students meet regularly to practice English skills outside regular classrooms and it requires an interesting supportive encouraging and fun atmosphere. The English club program of International Islamic Boarding School Baitul Manshurin Malang prepares the students to deliver religious speeches and the English translation of the Al-Quran on an international platform. This study investigates the implementation of the English club program in this school and the students rsquo perception on it to enhance their speaking sub-skills. The study was conducted under a mixed-method case study design combining qualitative data from interviews and observations with quantitative data from the close-ended questionnaire to provide a detailed understanding of a case. The findings showed that the students possess positive perceptions toward the English club program to enhance their speaking skills. Students perceived that the supportive English club community and environment enhance their motivation. Moreover it helped them improve linguistic competence (vocabulary grammar pronunciation) communicative competence (sociolinguistic strategic and discourse competence) fluency and comprehensibility. However the findings also showed that the provided lessons still only focused on linguistic competence. The teachers and students also encountered several obstacles. This study suggested that a detailed syllabus must be developed by focusing on all speaking sub-skills including linguistic and communicative competence for the future program rsquo s improvement.
