Abstract

The conflict concerning the best way to define lying and deceiving is still in dispute. On the one hand some philosophers perceive false implicatures as instances of lying. Other parties on the other hand perceive false implicatures as instances of misleading instead of lying. Analyzing the commitment and levels of meaning in deceptive statements is one strategy that is thought to offer insight into this problem. This study aims to provide empirical evidence on how speaker commitment and various levels of meaning influence people s lying judgment by using a commitment-based approach in the Indonesian community. One hundred and nine respondents were provided with four vignettes containing dialogues that communicate conversational implications which the speakers believe to be false. The findings show that the majority of deceptive propositions were rated as lies and lie values were closely correlated with speakers intentions and levels of commitment to the veracity of the information being given by their false claims.
