Abstract

Deixis shows a phenomenon where a word reference can change depending on who says the word. Levinson (1983) distinguished between gestural and symbolic usage of deixis. However discussion of this distinction still needs to be improved. Therefore this research raises the topic of deixis and how the use of gestural and symbolic deixis is used in the novel. The Secret Garden was authored by Frances Hodgson Burnett and was abridged by Martha Hailey. The study s objective is to analyze the types of deixis found in the novel the dominant deixis used and describe how gestural and symbolic usage of deixis is used in the novel. The present study employs a descriptive qualitative methodology. The data is taken from the narration and dialog story in the novel The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The result of this research is that there are five types of deixis in the novel namely person deixis (77.2%) temporal deixis (11.5%) spatial deixis (7.4%) social deixis (2%) and discourse deixis (1.9%). The most dominant deixis used is person deixis. Moreover this study also provides further knowledge about the use of gestural and symbolic use of deixis in novels. Gestural usage can help readers understand the context of the sentence faster than symbolic usage. It is because in gestural usage the speakers use gesture movements to help listeners interpret the deictic uses.
