Abstract

The present study investigates dysphemism types and functions used by supporters and detractors of Will Smith as the target of backlash regarding his controversy at the Oscars Awards 2022 on Twitter. We employed a qualitative approach with Allan and Burridge rsquo s (2006) model of dysphemism types as the main framework to classify identify and analyze the data. The data consists of 400 tweets (200 tweets by Smith rsquo s supporters and 200 tweets from Smith rsquo s detractors). The result revealed that supporters and detractors used the same ten types with different results supporters mostly use profane swearing (25 5%) and detractors mostly use a combination of dysphemism (18 5%). Moreover the most dominant function of dysphemism by supporters was to insult another celebrity (45 5%) while the most dominant function of dysphemism by detractors dysphemism was to insult the target (40 0%). Further investigation indicated that supporters and detractors utilized a combination of dysphemism to maximize their anger expression and simultaneously insult the two parties. Smith rsquo s supporters ostensibly interesting behaviour was bringing in another celebrity the Oscars Awards and detractors to defend Will Smith and the most prominent use of dysphemism by detractors was insulting as a form of resistance and aversion to Will Smith s physical aggression.
