Abstract

This study analyzes gaslighting in All Too Well The Short Film to discover the Maxim violations in the dialogue and understand the correlation between Maxim violation and gaslighting. This qualitative study uses the descriptive analysis method. The data are gathered from the movie dialogue and the analysis is done by describing the Maxim violations along with the context and connecting them to gaslighting techniques. The result shows nine data of Maxim violations including flouting and multiple Maxim violations and each violation becomes a medium to apply gaslighting tactics. The excessive utterance in Quantity Maxim violation leads to various gaslighting methods. Irrelevant response is used to control the direction of communication and to avoid certain issues. Insincere statements and lack of evidence express displacement and fake apology. Lastly the Maxim of Manner violation causes an obscure statement to shift blame. In addition the gaslighting is enabled by the power imbalance between the characters which is primarily caused by their age difference.
