Abstract

This research aimed to examine the effectiveness of utilizing Cake a mobile application for enhancing speaking skills in independent study that was conducted in Islamic Junior High School (MTsN) 2 Malang Indonesia. Thirty-one students of one 8th grade class were involved as the subjects of the research. Pre-experimental research design without any control group was used as the method in this research and the problem of the research was formulated in the form of a research question i.e. Is there any difference in the students rsquo speaking skills before and after they utilized Cake application in independent study Data were collected from pre-test and post-test and then analyzed by using SPSS 25. The result of the analysis revealed that the post-test mean score is higher than the pre-test mean score. It also revealed that the significance level (2-tailed) is 0.000 which is lower than ( alpha ) 0.05 (0.000 lt 0.05). This means that the H0 (Null Hypothesis) is rejected while the H1 (Alternative Hypothesis) cannot be rejected (is accepted) as there is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test results which also means that the use of Cake application for independent study is effective in helping the 8th graders enhance their English speaking skills.
