Abstract

Vocabulary mastery plays a fundamental role in understanding language. Despite its significance fourth graders of MI Muhammadiyah 22 Sugihwaras still had problems in mastering vocabulary. This study aims to investigate how picture card games could enhance elementary school students rsquo vocabulary mastery and figured out the students rsquo responses to the implementation of the strategy. Classroom Action Research (CAR) was applied as the research design in this study with one cycle. The participants of this study were 17 fourth graders in MI Muhammadiyah 22 Sugihwaras in the second semester of the 2021/2022 academic year. The instruments used in this study were a vocabulary test an observation sheet and a questionnaire. The findings of the study showed that 70.6% of the students could reach at least the minimum passing grade of 75 on Vocabulary Test 2 and 94.9% of the students gave positive responses towards picture card games. The picture card games could enhance the students rsquo vocabulary mastery in three steps providing pronunciation model reinforcing students rsquo memory of words rsquo meaning and spelling and encouraging students to be aware of word use.
