Abstract

This study aims to know the factors that affect students listening habits and identify the development of grammatical competence among students. The subjects of this study are 75 students and five teachers of SMKN 4 Malang from 10th and 11th graders of multimedia classes. This study uses a descriptive research survey. The instrument used to collect the data is a questionnaire using a google form and interview to 10 students and 4 teachers. The data analyzing was examined the responses one by one and made a tally from each question then counted and calculated the answer based on what respondents chose to obtain the percentage. The study reveal that the students describe their habits of listening to English materials is just good enough or at the sufficient level. The results of this study also indicate the factors that influence students listening habits are positive motivation in listening activities as well as concentration in listening the second is paralinguistic factors such as the grammatical context of the listening material they listen to and timing of listening activities the third is students anxiety such as difficult words and nervousness the last one is the background knowledge possessed by the learners for familiarity of the topic. These factors make the students perceive that the type of listening material used in listening activities will greatly contribute their communicative competences in the class.
