Abstract

This present study focused on investigating the correlation between students rsquo morphological awareness and their vocabulary knowledge. Aiming at finding out the correlation between ELE students rsquo morphological awareness and their vocabulary knowledge a quantitative research design with correlational Pearson product moment was utilised. A total of 72 respondents did a 40-item Morphological Awareness Test and a 100-item Vocabulary Size Test adapted from Amirjalili and Jabbari (2018) and Nation and Beglar (2015). The data analysis resulted 0.001 significance level ( lt 0.05) and 0.376 r value indicating a positive and weak correlation. Here the students rsquo morphological awareness contributed to the extent of 14.1% to students rsquo vocabulary knowledge with the rest 85.9% contribution was from other variables or factors outside of this study. From the result of the study language lecturers are suggested to explicitely teach various acivities in morphology utilizing the instruments used in this study derrivational test that focuses on creating new words and judgement task that allows students to make logical judgements to the possible combination of morphemes so they can create new actually existing lexical items which also means enhancing their vocabulary knowledge.
