Abstract

Visual novels have the potency to be implemented as a teaching media in order to help students in improving their reading skills. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the implementation of visual novels can improve the reading skill of tenth grader of SMAN 1 Lawang Kabupaten Malang. Classroom action research (CAR) was used as the design of this study consisting of 36 students from class X Science-3 SMAN 1 Lawang as the participants. This study used several research instruments which were an achievement test conducted at the end of the cycle an observation sheet for the English teacher a field note and a close-ended questionnaire. The research rsquo s finding showed that the implementation of visual novels helps students to improve their reading skill. By following these steps in implementing visual novels as media in teaching English reading students rsquo reading skill can be improved. First teacher need to present the visual novel used in the classroom using LCD projector. Second the teacher moved on to the pre-reading activities by asking students about their high school life experiences while also explaining about the intrinsic elements of narrative text the social function of narrative text language features of narrative text and also the generic structure of narrative text. Third teacher moved to the next step by starting the whilst-reading activities here students were asked to do a roleplaying as one of the characters of the story so they can be engaged with the story even better. Next teacher moved to the last step which was post-reading activities. Here students and the teacher discussed about the intrinsic elements language features generic structure and the social function of narrative text. In the evaluation phase the result collected in the end of the cycle was 86 percent students manage to achieve the success criteria which was a score of 75 or above. With that consideration the result of that cycle was a successful cycle and no further cycle was needed. Consequently a conclusion was taken that visual novels can be used to help tenth grader to improve their reading skill. Nevertheless teachers need to make a big consideration to details and the speed of the teaching-learning activities when they conduct the instruction using visual novels in order to make certain that students can follow the teaching-learning activities well.
