Abstract

Online applications are used as the primary tools for distributing teaching materials during virtual teaching and learning process. Although there are many applications used in virtual environtment the teachers were still unsure what application the students mostly liked and supported them in learning English especially four significant English skills. The researcher employed a descriptive quantitative approach especially a cross-sectional survey to investigate senior high school students rsquo preference of online applications used in the English Classroom during virtual teaching and learning process. The respondents were 99 senior high school students at SMAN 04 Malang and were chosen through Convenience sampling based on the convenience and availability rsquo s subjects. The instrument was a questionnaire based on CALL evaluation criteria and descriptive analysis using percentages and thematic analysis was used. The close-ended result showed that Google classroom and WhatsApp were perceived as the beneficial applications which succeeded in each criterion listed and as the two preferred applications. The open-ended result showed that Google Classroom ranked first as the most favorable application and helpful in improving students rsquo reading skills based on their perceptions. While other applications are not as impactful as Google classroom.
