Abstract

The Total Physical Response (TPR) method is known for teaching vocabulary using gestures and body movements. The research objective of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of TPR in improving the vocabulary mastery of young learners. In this research the participants involved were 27 students of the fourth grade. To evaluate the achievement of implementing this method a one-group pretest-posttest design as pre-experimental research was conducted. The data is analyzed using Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test and the result indicates there is a significant difference of the vocabulary mastery of the students before and after the intervention. The post-test scores improved better from the pre-test scores. The obtained scores of mean of the pre-test is 76.24 while the post-test is 90.22. In implementing the TPR method the learning process should rely on student-centered and provide them with appropriate learning method and facilities. As a result the TPR method for EYL learners creates a positive learning environment in mastering vocabulary.
