Abstract

Academic speaking is an important skill student have to master in an academic context to further engage with not only classroom activities but also professional world. There are three main components of academic speaking namely delivery language use and topic development. English debating community is a platform for students to learn through participating in various activities to acquire English debating and academic speaking skills. This study was conducted to investigate 1) activities in English debating community that improve academic speaking skills 2) successful debaters rsquo perceptions on using English debate for their speaking ability 3) successful English debaters rsquo suggestions in implementing English debate in classroom context. The research respondents were five successful debaters who met certain criteria for this research. The research design was a case study and used open-ended questionnaires interviews and observations as data collection instruments. The findings showed that constant speech with feedback from coach is the most contributed activity in English debating community for respondents rsquo academic speaking skills. Four respondents perceived that English debating community positively contributed to their performance in academic speaking standardized tests. These findings also delivered supplementary suggestions to bring academic debate in classroom context for language teaching process.
