Abstract

Prior knowledge is one of the important components of reading comprehension. Prior knowledge is a collection of information that students have and it is stored in their long-term memory. Students need to have such knowledge to understand the texts easier when reading. However when the students own too much prior knowledge particularly in reading comprehension tests the validity and reliability of the test will be seriously affected. The test or exams that contain too much information that relates to students rsquo prior knowledge will not make the students read the text when answering the questions. This study is aimed to investigate how far the texts and questions in reading comprehension final exams are familiar to student rsquo s prior knowledge. Fifteen (15) junior high school final exams were used as the data. Two checklists were used to analyze the texts and questions. The criteria used to analyze the texts and questions were derived from the theory proposed by Carrols (1987) and Brown (2001). The result of the study shows that from 15 junior high school exams in Indonesia all of them are familiar to student rsquo s prior knowledge. However there were 16 texts which were familiar to the test taker because the texts were repeatedly included in such tests and the text were close to students daily lives which disturbs the reading comprehension process since the student could answer the exams without reading the text. The other result also shows that there were 13 questions the validity of which are questionable because the questions were too easy to answer and did not measure the construct of reading comprehension which refers to macro and micro skills of reading comprehension. Thus it is suggested to English teachers and test developers to be more considerate in selecting the texts and questions that will be included in reading comprehension examinations
