Abstract

This study is intended to develop a writing workbook that is suitable for the eighth grader of SMPN 11 Malang with the aim to help them practice their writing skill. The workbook adopts a genre-based approach for its teaching and learning process. It focuses on three genres of text that are taught in eighth grade according to the competency standard of Curriculum 2013 greeting cards recount texts and announcements. The study used a Research amp Development (R amp D) method which was done starting with need analysis involving students filling out questionnaires. The data collected from need analysis were used for the development of the workbook first draft. The first draft was validated by the experts and undergone several revisions in accordance with their opinion and suggestion before the try out. The try-out was held in two meetings with 29 students of eighth grade as participants. Based on the try-out conducted the students stated that the workbook was suitable for them to be used for the learning.
