Abstract

An English teacher has qualifications that must be met to become a professional teacher such as having good English skills. The ability to read is an important skill because it is a component of a foreign language to understand written material. Not only that to become a teacher must be balanced with pedagogic ability namely Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK). The aim of this study is to measure the reading ability of undergraduate students of English Language Education (ELE) according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) in relation to their teaching readiness. This study involved 60 undergraduate students of ELE study program of cohort 2017 at the State University of Malang. The research method is descriptive mixed-methods. Quantitative data were obtained from the CEFR-based Proficiency Test for Indonesian English Teachers (PTIET) reading test. The results of the reading test show that 68% of students are at level B1 17% of students are at level B1 13% of students are at level A2 and 2% of students are at level A2. The qualitative data was gained from five students participated in the interviews of which three of them stated that they were ready to teach in secondary schools and the other two stated that they were not ready to teach. From the results this study show that undergraduate students of ELE study program must improve their reading and teaching skills. Stakeholders should improve the quality of courses related to language skills and teaching skills.
