Abstract

YouTube has been a popular site for watching videos. One of the most popular video types to watch is English vlogs. To improve their listening skills students could use this type of video. The research design used in this study is a survey study aiming to investigate how English department students perceive the use of English vlogs to improve their listening skills. The study employed a questionnaire and interview as the instruments. This study involved 73 students as participants from the English department of Universitas Negeri Malang 2018 and 2019 cohorts. The results of this study show positive responses from the students that they have no problem accessing YouTube to watch English vlogs and by watching vlogs students listening skills are also improving. Furthermore students can expand their vocabulary distinguish accents and improve their word recognition. In addition using vlogs makes the students more motivated to practice listening in English because they can learn while enjoying the video. Hence teachers and students are recommended to practice English using English vlogs as it has a positive effect not only on learning but also their affects to motivate students in practicing listening.
