Abstract

For years Disney Princesses have been popular among children. Nevertheless sadly one of the princesses Esmeralda from The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Trousdale 1996) was removed from the list of Disney Princesses due to the low sales of its movie and its considered unsuitable theme for children. Consequently Esmeralda has barely received the attention unlike other princess characters whose persona continues to be developed by Disney including through remakes and live-action. This paper argues that the removal of Esmeralda indicates a neoliberal challenge against feminism and that political economy strongly influences movie production and distribution from time to time. Eventually Esmeralda was created and distributed in the context of commercial cinema whereby profit is likely to triumph over politics. Commercial cinema as proven by this research remains an institution governed by the market. When political contents become profitable commercial cinema will not shudder to engage them. But when they no longer offer profit prospects scrapping them from sales is not impossible.
