Abstract

This study examines the masculinity of Kate Blackwell the protagonist of Sidney Sheldon rsquo s thriller novel Master of the Game. In order to observe the identity of Kate Blackwell in the novel this study utilizes Butler rsquo s (1990) gender performativity theory to understand how gender is constituted throughout time and instituted through a stylized repetition of acts. It is realized from the observation that Sidney Sheldon aims to overcome gender preconceptions through the heroine Kate Blackwell by creating a protagonist who is able to defy the conventional feminine norms as Blackwell repeatedly develops masculine traits through a series of aggressive and assertive behaviors. Sidney Sheldon conveys that it is possible for women to be active agents and assert their power like men. Her resistance to change gender power relation is clearly evident throughout the progress of the story. Sidney Sheldon depicts Kate Blackwell rsquo s acts to reinforce the notion that gender power relation is negotiable as she keeps providing more insight on the fluidity of gender identity.
