Abstract

Online corpus and online dictionary have been widely used as learning media in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Previous studies have compared the two media in vocabulary instruction with varying results. However there is scarce evidence of comparing the two media in grammar instruction. The two media are potential to be used for Data-driven Learning (DDL) in grammar instruction due to their capability to provide digitalized language data in complete English sentences yet the genre and types of sentences are different. Therefore the current research investigates the effects of using online corpus and online dictionary as the media in DDL on English Department students rsquo grammar mastery. It also investigates the difference in students perceptions of the use of the two media in DDL in grammar instruction. A quasi-experimental with a counterbalanced design was employed to answer the research questions. Since there were two media compared then the order of the treatment was conditioned into two parts. In Part 1 the first group of students learned grammar using an online corpus for four meetings while the second group learned using an online dictionary. In Part 2 the first group of students learned grammar with an online dictionary for four meetings while the second group learned with an online corpus for four meetings. After each replication the students took a grammar test and filled in a questionnaire. Therefore there were two grammar tests (one for each replication) and two questionnaires (one for each medium). The grammar tests were developed to measure the students mastery of the grammar in terms of knowledge of the grammar and performance to use the grammar. Besides questionnaires were used for each media to measure students perceptions towards the use of online corpus and online dictionary. There were 65 first-year students involved as the sample of this research to be specific there were 33 students in the first group and 32 students in the second group. These students were chosen because they were going to receive explicit grammar instruction in the first semester at the university. A statistical analysis was implemented at the .05 level of significance to test the hypotheses. The statistical analyses used Mann-Whitney U Test because the data in grammar tests were not normally distributed and the questionnaires contained ordinal data. The statistical analysis comparing grammar tests results revealed no statistical difference in the students grammar mastery after learning with online corpus and online dictionary (U 1980 p .535). A similar result was also found when comparing the results of the questionnaires that there was no statistical difference of the students perceptions after learning with online corpus and online dictionary as media in DDL (U 2007 p .622). From the findings it can be concluded that the students rsquo grammar mastery is not different after they have learned grammar using the online corpus and online dictionary as media in DDL and they have the same perceptions on the use of both media in grammar learning. Regarding students rsquo learning experience with DDL they positively view the use of both media in grammar class because the activities in DDL enable the grammar instruction to be student-centered. Therefore the pedagogical implications of the findings are the language data provided by the online corpus and the online dictionary can be used for grammar teaching and learning even though the language data are different in types of sentences and genre. English teachers are recommended to use online corpus or online dictionary as media in DDL along with video conferencing software and word processor to enhance students rsquo grammar mastery and to promote their analytical skills on patterns of English grammar. Students are also encouraged to implement the DDL steps outside the classroom when they learn grammar individually either using the online corpus or online dictionary so that they can have retention of the grammar learning materials.
