Abstract

The need for English for Specific Purposes (ESP) is snowballing rapidly furthermore there are some pitfalls of teaching ESP found in Universitas Islam Negeri Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang particularly in learning speaking e.g. the observed skill. There are some weaknesses of teaching ESP which are 1) the unfitting curriculum that is chosen to be practiced in every department for certain cases 2) varied input of every students rsquo previous learning so that the class is always heterogeneous 3) the great number of students in a class that is around fifty students 4) limited in time to learn English which is once a week and 5) the lack of students rsquo enthusiasm participating in the learning process. Pointing at those weaknesses of teaching ESP a flipped classroom model and the community of inquiry are considered as solution. This study aimed to analyze the correlation between a flipped classroom model the community of inquiry and speaking ability of ESP students. The study used correlational design to analyze the correlation among a flipped classroom model the community of inquiry and speaking ability. The participants in this study were two classes of freshmen students required English for Specific Purposes that are 29 students of Sharia Business Law and 30 students of Islamic Family Law study program who took Intensive English I. In collecting the data there are three instruments as follows questionnaire for a flipped classroom model (QaFCM) questionnaire for the community of inquiry (QtCoI) and speaking test. The correlational analysis shows that a flipped classroom model has a moderately strong positive relationship with speaking ability. It indicates that the more enthusiastic students are about the flipped classroom concept the better their capacity to communicate will be. Last but not least this study also found that there is also a moderately significant relationship between the community of inquiry and students rsquo speaking ability. Similar to previous finding the stronger the students speaking skill the more positive attitude they have about the community of inquiry.
