Abstract

One of approaches to enhance students speaking skills is Problem-Based Learning. The study rsquo s purpose was to find out how PBL can enhance students speaking abilities. Participants in the study are 15 eighth-graders in the academic year of 2021-2022 from a junior high school in Sampang City. This study made use of the classroom action research (CAR) methodology. The cycle was made up of planning phase implementing phase observing phase and reflecting phase. Data collections for the study were collected using both qualitative and quantitative. The study rsquo s instruments that were employed are speaking assessment test (rubric assessment) observation checklist and field note. The speaking assessment rubric was updated from Theresa s (2011) version which was modified. The minimum completeness criteria (MCC) set by the researcher were passed by 80% of the students. The outcome showed that PBL was a successful and ground-breaking strategy for enhancing students speaking abilities. So that it may be used as a substitute strategy for the speaking learning process. Additionally it demonstrated how engaged the students were in the teaching-learning process when the PBL technique was being used as seen by the observation checklists and field notes. Because the study s success criteria were met in this instance the study was completed in one cycle.
