Abstract

Extensive reading which has principles as reading for pleasure and general information is a compulsory course in EFL (English as a Foreign Language) studies. Extensive reading has a very positive effect on improving English language skills specifically in vocabulary. However in the implementation of extensive reading in tertiary education there were many challenges. These challenges may hinder the objective of extensive reading courses to enhance students rsquo vocabulary. One of the main challenges in extensive reading courses is the unsuitability of reading materials for students. Therefore this study aims to investigate students perceptions of Extensive reading implementation in enriching their vocabulary and the kinds of books that students are interested in enriching their vocabulary. This research conducted in Universitas Negeri Malang where the researcher selected senior students from the English department who had passed the extensive reading course. This study used a qualitative method with a semi-structural interview instrument for data collection. The result of the interview showed that extensive reading is still popular among students albeit with some concerns about the implementation. It was also found that EFL students rsquo most preferred reading materials to enrich their vocabulary are novels.
