Abstract

In EFL (English as Foreign Language) context four skills are the main focus of English studies. The most challenging of those skills is writing skill. Students find difficulties in writing because writing needs cognitive and linguistic skills. According to Krashen (2011) reading habit is one factor that can influence students rsquo writing skills. To prove this the researcher conducted correlation research in SMP Negeri 4 Malang. The subject of this research is 8th- grade students at SMP Negeri 4 Malang. From a total of 8 classes in 8th-grade students the researcher took two classes as samples for this research. The total number of two classes that researcher took as samples for this research was 60 students. The researcher used a questionnaire to collect the data on students rsquo reading habits. The researcher also conducted a narrative writing test to collect the data on students rsquo writing ability. The researcher then inputted the data to SPSS 22 then analyzed it using Pearson Product Moment Correlation. The result of this research found that the correlation obtained is .659. According to the interpretation of r-value there is a medium positive correlation for r-value ranging from .500 to .700. In addition there was a significant correlation in this research because the correlation obtained which is .659 was bigger than the r-table of 60 which is .254. This means that there was a significant positive correlation between students rsquo reading habit and their ability to write. Based on this research s conclusion the researcher suggests that teachers should make lesson plans that culminate students rsquo reading habits.
